The Hospital Ward

The story- The Hospital Ward

The hospital had been closed for decades, its windows boarded, its halls left to rot. But tonight, Daniel and Mia stood at its entrance, flashlights in hand, daring each other to step inside.

“Why are we doing this again?” Mia asked, her voice trembling despite her attempt at humour.

Daniel smirked. “Because everyone says Ward Seven is haunted. And because we’re stupid enough to check.”

The doors groaned as they pushed them open. Inside, the air was heavy with dust and the faint scent of antiseptic that lingered even after all these years. The tiled floor was cracked, the walls stained.

Their footsteps echoed unnaturally, bouncing back at them as though the building itself was listening.

From somewhere deeper in the hospital came a sound. A faint creak. Then a whisper.

Mia froze. “Did you hear that?”

Daniel nodded slowly. “Yeah. Probably pipes.”

But the whisper grew louder, forming words.

“Daniel…”

His name. Spoken clearly.

Daniel’s breath caught. “That’s not pipes.”

They moved down the corridor, flashlights sweeping across rusted gurneys and broken chairs. At the end of the hall, a door stood slightly ajar. Above it, faded letters spelt out: Ward Seven.

Mia whispered, “This is it.”

Daniel pushed the door open. Inside, rows of beds lined the walls, their sheets yellowed and torn. Shadows clung to the corners, thicker than they should have been.

On one bed sat a figure. Pale, thin, its eyes hollow.

Daniel’s flashlight flickered. “Hello?”

The figure tilted its head. “Daniel…”

Mia grabbed his arm. “It knows your name.”

The figure stood, moving with jerky motions. “You came back.”

Daniel shook his head. “I’ve never been here before.”

The figure laughed, a brittle sound. “You were promised.”

The beds creaked. Sheets shifted. More figures rose, pale and hollow-eyed, their mouths whispering in unison.

“Stay… stay… stay…”

Mia screamed, pulling Daniel toward the door. But it slammed shut, trapping them inside.

Daniel shouted, “What do you want?”

The whispers grew louder. “Forever.”

The floor split open, revealing darkness beneath. Shadows surged upward, wrapping around Daniel’s legs.

He screamed, clawing at the bedframe. “Help me!”

Mia grabbed his arms, pulling with all her strength. “I won’t let go!”

The figures pressed closer, their whispers drowning out her voice.

Daniel’s grip slipped. The shadows pulled harder.

Mia shouted, tears streaming. “No!”

With a final wrench, the darkness swallowed him.

The ward was silent. The figures dissolved into smoke.

Mia collapsed, sobbing.

From the bed, the first figure spoke again. “He is ours.”

Mia staggered to her feet. “Give him back!”

The figure tilted its head. “He will return. You will too.”

She fled the ward, running down the corridor, the hospital groaning around her.

Outside, she collapsed on the steps, gasping for breath.

Behind her, the hospital stood silent once more.

But in the broken windows of Ward Seven, a faint glow flickered.

And a whisper drifted into the night.

“Daniel…”
